Welcome to AP Chem. Summer work is meant to get us off to a running start when fall arrives. START NOW to make your way leisurely through this review. Do not think you should wait until the end of the summer so it is "fresh in your mind." The LONGER it is in your mind, the better it will stick. Email me with any questions or concerns. I will be "on-line" most of the summer.

Your very first assignment is to send an email to me. Please do this by July 20th. In the email you should answer the following questions: My email is at the bottom of this web-site. Please be sure and put your NAME in the email - some email addresses are hard to identify. In the email, please answer the following questions:
  1. How often do you read your email?
  2. What is/are your reason(s) for taking AP Chemistry?
  3. List three goals for yourself in this class that you would like to achieve next year.
  4. Give me a sense of what you have done in the past to prepare for what you suspected was going to be a challenging test/quiz. Where (inside your home, bedroom, kitchen table, etc or elsewhere; library, friends home, school) do you study, what hours of the day do you study, do you study best alone or with a compatible study partner(s). In other words, I am interested in what your studying has looked like in the past.
Memorize the info on the green sheet - When you were given your textbook, you were also give a two sided green sheet of paper with info to memorize for the first day of school. If you have lost that sheet, you can access it right here. Get started memorizing the polyatomic ions and solubility rules and strong acid formulas NOW.... make flash cards if that will help you.

Your summer review work is in the first three chapters of the textbook. These chapters will mostly be review from your first year of chemistry. You should have picked up a textbook before you left school for the summer. If you did not, you can go to NHS and sign one out in guidance. Note that you are expected to send me three separate emails through the course of the summer letting me know when you finish each chapter and I will send you a practice test. I do not expect to get only one email telling me you finished all three chapters on the day before school starts. You will be quizzed and tested when you return in the fall.

Chapter 1
  • Read the whole chapter pages 1-28. You should find all of this chapter review. Be sure and spend the time looking at the pictures and diagrams while reading the captions.
  • Please work the sample exercises in the tan boxes throughout the chapter: 4, 6, 7, 8
  • At the back of the chapter (pg 29+) work the following problems. Don't forget that you have worked-out solutions to all of these problems: 11, 13, 19, 23, 31, 33, 37, 51, 58, 64
  • After you finish reviewing this chapter and working through the problems, email me and I will send you a Chapter 1 practice test to work on and bring to class on the first day of school. (You will not receive anything back from me via email until July 18 - I will be in Europe until then.)

Chapter 2
  • Read the whole chapter pages 35-65. You will find that the material at the beginning of this chapter has some new information, which will require you to read more carefully. The latter part of the chapter should be review. Be sure and spend the time looking at the pictures and diagrams while reading the captions.

  • Consider using these Quizlet flashcards (by Ethan Bein) to practice nomenclature and solubility rules
  • After you finish reviewing this chapter and working through the problems, email me and I will send you a Chapter 2 practice test to work on and bring to class on the first day of school. (You will not receive anything back from me via email until July 18 - I will be in Europe until then.)

Chapter 3
  • Read the whole chapter pages 75-103 (skipping pg 94 - combustions analysis - we will go over this when you return). You will find that the material at the beginning of this chapter has new information, which will require you to read more carefully. The latter part of the chapter should be review. Be sure and spend the time looking at the pictures and diagrams while reading the captions.
