  • PRS intro (1-5)
  • the scientific method - “balls dropping” then PRS intro (6-14)
  • introductions with textbook (point out NS 1.1 - reading ch 1) & website
  • Discuss LAD Safety Poster if time allows.
Outside of class you should, (All documents are located on the documents page of the appropriate chapter.)
  • There is no excuse for not getting what you need from this website. Email me if you are having difficulty finding something. Spend some time navigating to see what is here. Go to the Course information link (in the Honors Chem drop down menu) and read about organizing your notebook.
  • PER 2 - some of you need to be sure and bring back your book receipt on Tues and turn it in (Ben, Jonah, William, Colin, Adrienne, & Sam S
  • Complete (if you haven’t already - Sequoia, Colin, Adrienne, Sam S, Marie) the first day questionaire, AND fill out the LAD Safety contract (located on the chap 1 document page)
  • use NS 1.1 - to guide you while you read chapter 1 of the text book (pgs 3-16 )
  • do questions in text 10-13 (pg 18) Check your answers with those available at the back of the text or online.
  • do LAD 1.1 - Candle Activity (Be sure and keep it safe.) Jot down answers - full sentences are not necessary - phrases are fine.
  • Read the LAD Safety Poster guidelines so we can discuss it in class on Tues. Use the More Info link above to navigate to the LAD Safety Rules on-line to look up your Rule and start planning your poster. (If you lost your Safety Poster guidelines, you can find one on the chap 1 documents page.
  • read NS 1.2 - Scientific Method. Study to be able to compare and contrast the terms: Hypothesis, Law, and Theory.
  • get a three ring binder and organize it. Use this link for ideas on how you might organize your notebook. If you need a binder (or dividers), there are plenty available in class, just come after school and ask.
  • Print and read the intro & definitions and examples (and bring to class) LAD 2.1 - Chemical or Physical?

Tues Jan 26
- No Extra Help - Olympiad Practice
In Class we did,
  • collect LAD Safety Contract (put holes in it and put it in my notebook)
  • PRS - candle (1-2) then 3 candle demo then 3-8) Collect candle LAD 1.1 (holes, no fuzzies)
  • do LAD 2.1 - Chemical or Physical?
  • Questions on the Safety Poster? Due on Mon 2/1
  • demo: syringes and gas ramp (flames and CO2)
Outside of class you should,
  • Navigate to Course Information page in the drop-down menu and familiarize yourself with details about this course and use the links on the side of that page to review information you might want to know about this course.
  • print and read the introduction to LAD 2.2 - Chromatography (we will do it in class on Wed)
  • (before doing the prelad for LAD 2.3) you may find it useful to first use the “what makes a good data table document” on the Ch 2 document page
  • print and do the preLAD for LAD 2.3 - Separation of Mixtures (I will collect the PreLAD)
  • do an initial drive-by read-through of chapter 2 (pgs 21-41) especially spend time checking out the pictures and their captions.
  • Read and review page 2 of LAD 2.1 - Chemical or Physical.
  • Jonah KF, Colin, Adrienne, Sam S, & Delaine - Get your Lab Safety Contracts Signed.

Wed Jan 27 - Extra help available, sign up in class.
In Class we did,

  • physical properties: extensive/intensive, quantitative/qualitative
  • LAD 2.2 - Chromatography
  • Solid, liquid, gas - demo: syringes and gas ramp (flames and CO2)
Outside of class you should,
  • work on your LAD Safety Poster, due Mon 2/1
  • read NS 2.5 - Mass vs Weight
